Regimen + Goals

My Hair Regimen: I moisturize and/or oil my hair daily. As needed (usually weekly) I cleanse my hair and scalp with a moisturizing shampoo (or a clarifying one if there's build up). I do a moisturizing OR protein treatment with every shampoo. I stretch my relaxers 3-4 months.

My go-to protective/low manipulation styles: buns, braid-outs and halfwigs. In 2012 I want to start experimenting with more heat-free styles. I air dry most of the time and flat iron for length checks only.

I'm currently midback length (MBL) and actively working towards reaching waist length by my graduation in mid-2012.

Things They Don't Tell You About Being Relaxed

...the good and the bad:

1. We still have to straighten it. Just because a relaxer chemically alters the strand to make it straighter, doesn't mean the job is done until the next relaxer. Still gotta use a flat iron if you want the polished look.

2. It's not easy. We always hear about how hard transitioning is. Well being relaxed is literally transitioning over and over again.

3. It's easy. On the other hand, it's pretty easy to get relaxed hair to do what you want it to do. For example, detangling is not a challenge when you're a few weeks post.

4. Kink & coil envy. Every time you see healthy, nicely styled natural hair in real life, you're intrigued. Sometimes you start thinking about what your own hair would look if you went natural. This is when braid-outs, twist-outs etc come in very handy.

5. Natural products work for us too. This emergence of the "natural" hair care market is benefiting relaxed heads too by giving everyone better alternatives and quality ingredients. The products that drench natural hair in moisture do the exact same thing for relaxed tresses.

  1. I agree with point #3 most - I just transitioned back to relaxed (texturizer) after being natural for 2 years and although I'm only 1 month post, it's soooo much easier than natural hair! I cut my detangling process in half and I can still have the thick, "natural" look very easily.

  2. Wow, never thought of #2 like that... interesting! I don't agree with number #1 but everything else, I can fully relate to, especially #4 — I blame LHCF for that though.

  4. #2 literally cracked me up! And I agree whole heartedly with #4...I mean I REALLY go through this badly! And I love my relaxed hair to death, but those gorgeous lush heads of natural hair just do something to me everytime!
