Regimen + Goals

My Hair Regimen: I moisturize and/or oil my hair daily. As needed (usually weekly) I cleanse my hair and scalp with a moisturizing shampoo (or a clarifying one if there's build up). I do a moisturizing OR protein treatment with every shampoo. I stretch my relaxers 3-4 months.

My go-to protective/low manipulation styles: buns, braid-outs and halfwigs. In 2012 I want to start experimenting with more heat-free styles. I air dry most of the time and flat iron for length checks only.

I'm currently midback length (MBL) and actively working towards reaching waist length by my graduation in mid-2012.

Brahmi Pre-Poo

Benefits of Brahmi Powder:
- Cools the scalp and induces sound sleep
- Controls dandruff
- Makes hair long, dark, Dense & lustrous
- Strengthens hair roots

After the setback, I decided to pamper my hair with Ayurveda this weekend.

Brahmi powder + water. it was a little runny in this pic so I added more powder to make it more of a brownie mix consistency

Applied to hair and then loose twist.
At this point, my hair feels very strong -- but dry. So I decided to apply Tresemme Naturals Nourishing Moisture Conditioner to my hair on top of the brahmi. This really helped to add slip and moisture. I really really really like this conditioner by the way (been using it for 2 weeks and half the bottle is done lol) because it is inexpensive, has no cones, good slip and no protein. Perfect for frequent co-washes if you ask me. Glad Tresemme listened and delivered a great product!
If I could describe the Brahmi process in one word: MESSY! After I applied it to my whole head, I put on a shower cap and let it sit for a few hours. Which is what I'm doing as I type this so I'll update this post with the results after I wash it out. By the way this stuff smells like a mix between wet soil and teabags if anyone's curious lol.

 ----

Rinsed the mixture out of my hair and my hair felt like I had done a color rinse. Very strong/hard/tangly. So I shampooed (2x) with HE CMH Shampoo. Hair was even dryer so I conditioned with Joico Intense Hydrator for 3 mins and as expected, that stuff softened my hair right up. After that, I towel blotted and applied Taliah Waajid Protective Mist Bodifier (this was my first time using, I wasn't wowed but in all fairness my hair was still kinda hard from the Brahmi treatment. It took some rubbing in to make it absorb, but once it dissolved my hair did feel better). After a little Fantasia IC Gel on the edges, I am now air drying with a satin scarf. Whew!

After Brahmi treatment (5 weeks post)

Overall the Brahmi experience has made me curious about Henna. Ayurvedic powder pre-poos are something I could see myself adding in my regimen. But I would only do it once a month because honestly the process took a long time and was extremely messy. But overall it was a good treatment and I noticed my hair got a little darker.

update: Okay now that my hair is dry, it feels extremely soft, light and strong at the same time. Still smell the brahmi which is fine. This treatment is a keeper but I won't do it often (messy and time consuming).

  1. Try mixing the Brahmi powder with the actual conditioner to thicken it up a tad, and to get the benefits of both

  2. Brittany do you have a blog?

and yea I ended up adding conditioner to my hair after the brahmi was already on it to add slip and moisture. Next time I'll add conditioner into the actual mix to make things easier

  3. Sadly no blog for me :( I am bad about keeping up with it for some reason.

  4. I'm thinking about trying Cassia. I swore I'd never do ayervedic treatments for the very reasons you listed...messy and time consuming, but I may try it soon. Have you ever tried Cassia? I definitely wanna make my hair a little darker so maybe I should try Brahmi...IDK! lol.

  5. Nope I've never tried Cassia but I would wait until after your stretch to try out the Indian powders. I'm only 5 weeks post and had trouble detangling my new growth (the paste made my hair hard to detangle at the roots)

  6. Try amla for helping "de-bulk" new growth and define curls. I love it or Kalpi Tone (lots of good herbs combined in one powder) when I'm stretching.
